mood board

The location of the film is around London and the picture shows one of the background elements we use therefore it creates a mood of familiarity to people who know anything about London know about the London eye. With the hooded figure we create the mood of both fear and mystery as we don't know who the character is. The picture of the good and bad connected also link in with this as we don't know weather this character is good or bad. I believe that all great thriller films have this struggle of good and bad and with the good guys using elements of the bad to beat the bad guys. The picture of the chess pieces shows that there could be something more going on as one character who we may think to be a big boss type may just be a pawn for someone a lot bigger this could help lead into another trailer. The picture of the man threatening another shows that the film will have some sort of conflict and this ties in with the hooded figure as it creates a dark and mysterious mood.

war of the worlds trailer analysis

The establishing shots at the beginning of the trailer are quite interesting and from them we know that the film is set in the city of New York this creates a feeling of familiarity as the audience knows where New York is and therefore they recognize it and for worldwide audiences as it is a place a lot of people want to go and therefore they can identify with the location.

Tom Cruise's character is a major feature of the trailer and we find out that he is a father in this film and this creates a feeling of empathy in the audience as people don't want his character or the characters kids to get hurt as  the audience empathizes with a family as they may be in one. As things begin to happen in the trailer we always hope that the family is OK as one member is a small girl and this creates a protective feeling in the audience. As the other child is a teenage boy that creates a feeling of sympathy with people who are also teenage boys as they will sympathies with his situation.

There is a really interesting shot that stands out for me and that is the close up of Cruise where his character speaks to camera.  This makes it feel as if he is talking to us the audience watching the trailer therefore giving us the feeling that he is talking to us therefore it is a direct mode of address therefore we keep focused on Tom Cruise's character. This shot is also used in a cross cut as he is talking to his daughter and she is in a low angle therefore showing her vulnerability and he is shown in a low angle to show his control and authority in the situation and that he may be able to beat what is coming. This also shows us that he is very serious and may be in trouble therefore creating worry as we can see other things going on around him and he is a likable character in the trailer.

The use of music in this trailer is quite effective and builds tension.  We can hear at first the peaceful and calm tones showing us that everything is OK and the characters we see a good characters as they aren't accompanied by dark and sinister music, but this music also builds tension as the audience know that this wont last and it gets a little more tension as it continues. the music drastically changes in the background as the narrative changes, when we start to see the earthquakes and the lightning hits it helps establish that this is a major plot point.

The director of this film is Spielberg and he is a unique selling point because of his reputation for making successful big budget films.  This is communicated to the target audience when mid action montage a credit comes up with his name and this shows that the audience need to know that Spielberg had a major role in this film, and it is in the middle of the action montage to show that it is a big budget film.

There is some interesting fast paced editing used when we see the destruction of the city therefore showing us that whatever is coming is much more dangerous than first thought. we also see the army fighting something this shows that there is something big coming therefore they know that Tom Cruise's character is in big trouble.

You can tell that this film is a science-fiction film because in the trailer we see lightning hitting in the same place and many things happening which are not able to explain by the technology we have. We also see large tentacle monsters which are thought to be aliens but both are big science fiction staples.

trailer analysis now you see me 2

The trailer starts with a rotating pan, mid shot of the main characters this establishes who this story is about. We then see a montage of mid shots which creates a feeling of excitement as we want to know how all these exciting scenes want to end. The trailers editing is very fast paced which plays on the action side of the film, we also see some comedic elements as there are elements which are comedic. The music which accompanies the trailer shows that the film is light hearted but it builds tension as the action montage builds to show the importance of the last shot. There is also a voice over which helps to tell the story, the voice over is used to create a tense background to the scene and it also helps to build the story from the last film. Overall the narrative is kept secret but the big reveal at the end shows that new characters are going to be added therefore creating an enigma code for the audience. The film advertises itself by offering a website and three different types of social media.

trailer analysis

The first shots we see are of massive landscapes which show us that this world is vast. We can tell this film is a fantasy because of the next establishing shot of a castle which doesn't look human built also we see a giant bird bigger than any real bird this shows that the film plays on the fantasy element a lot. we then see many establishing shots and a mid shot of a through the use of a mid-shot we can see this characters emotion is really worried and scared. We then see some Birdseye view shots of a destroyed town this shows us the magnitude of the attack then we see a montage of clips of monsters killing soldiers and another character seeing the death these monsters leave behind this creates a feeling of worry and the need to pick sides as they don't want to see the humans continue to be killed by these monsters. the shots that are very interesting are the medium shots of a character but in the foreground there is a dead solder's helmet therefore this shows us that this means a lot to the story. what is an interesting editing point is the choice of where to change the narrative, we see the monsters destroying and killing people then we see their side of the story which helps the audience to empathise with these characters therefore showing that they may not be the bad guys in the film. this then creates conflict in the audience as they will now want to know who's side they should be on. We then see a montage of shots of many different characters talking and we see a different side to the human characters therefore maybe creating even more conflict in the audience. This is juxtaposed  with many different action scenes this is a good editing choice as it shows that even though we have characters trying to avoid violence there still is violence. the target audience for this film is the age group between 13-21 this is obvious in the trailer as there is a lot of action which interests the younger audience of the bracket and more complex themes to interest the older bracket of the audience. The music in this trailer starts of slow and peaceful therefore showing the peace of the time but as it continues it gets more tense showing that something big is on its way and it ends with a faced paced action theme creating a feeling of excitement in the audience. what is said in the trailer is based around the war which seems to be coming and how some characters will do anything to avoid this war. The film is advertised at the end by showing a vague release date on June 2016 it also has a website which people can visit. Overall this film does tell a bit about the story but still leaves enigma codes in, for example is there a love interest between two characters is there a divide on both sides within the two groups.

location research

We filmed a part of our trailer on Westminster bridge as a way to create a familiarity with the audience also when picking this location we knew that the more international audiences as people from all of the world know about the houses of parliament and they are something people will notice in the trailer.

We chose to film at this location under the Churchill statue as it creates emotions in the audience as the UK audience don't want to see anything happen to this statue of the prime minster who lead England through the war.

We chose to use the pathway under the London eye as it is a well-known location and it can be familiarized to a worldwide audience.

trailer analysis hateful eight

The first thing we see is a few establishing shots of a snow covered land and this tells the audience that this landscape could be a factor in the film. We then see many different shots of a man walking up to a house and the another man falling to the floor this shows that this is an action scene as this is violence. we then see a montage of many different action backed shots which then lead to a close up of a character to show that he is a main character and that he is a joking character is he is laughing. we then see many different shots of all the characters in the film therefore this establishes the films characters without revealing the plot. when we see the montage of the characters we also see their nick names this is good editing as it shows the characters in a different light. the music in this trailer begins slow but builds to the end title this builds tension and shows the audience that the film will be very action based. We also hear a voice over for the start of the trailer this is a device used to help establish a characters mood or to help tell a story. this film advertises itself by saying how it is filmed in 70mm technology and it also uses its release date of Christmas as a way to advertise as it takes a christmas phrase and changes it for the films plot. From this trailer we cant tell much from the plot but we can tell that it is a small cast film.

Trailer analysis

This film starts with an over the shoulder establishing shot of a arena this shows that the film is going to be based around sports. We then see a low angle panning shot following a character this shot also tells us that this is an important character who we should focus on. We then see many different shots of the title character training this is a montage to show that there is a progression in the film of this characters skills. there is then a multi shot of a group of characters surrounding the main character this shows that this is an important discussion as they all need to be there. We then see a shot reverse shot of the two main characters in the film having an argument which emphasizes the fact that this is a drama. We then see a montage of the main character telling the same group of people about why he is doing what he has chosen to do. The music in the trailer shows us that this films is a drama as the music starts of tense but then it gets much more upbeat which shows that the character will overcome adversity and achieve what he has set out to achieve. The story is revealed to us as the story of legendary Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens therefore it is based around a true story which many people already know. this film is advertised with a coming soon banner and the fact that is based around a true story.

Trailer analysis

In the beginning of the trailer we get told through credits that there is a experiment in Stamford university this shows the drama of the movie, we then see through slow cuts who the main characters are and what their roles will be in the film, we then see an over the shoulder shot of a man walking across many different landscapes this establishes the university as the main location. We see through what is being said, the people who said they wouldn't want to be guards in a prison have been made guards therefore this shows the contrast between them and the people who have been made prisoners. Through quick cuts we see the loss of control by the people running the experiment this then creates a fear in the audience this is a convention of thrillers. The music starts of tense but slow therefore it shows that something is going to happen but we don't know when. After one scene where the use of a multi shot shows an ultercation go wrong as the student being a guard breaks a rule and uses pjs oval punishment to sanction a prisoner. This is when the music builds up more pace an the quick snap shots of the bad things which follow after the ultercation. The trailer advertises itself by showing critic reviews. Overall in this trailer you can tell that the characters are going to be a big part of the story but even though there was a lot which went on there was no formal introduction to a character just unnamed interviews.

Quantum of solace trailer analysis

This trailer begins with a panning shot of a man walking across a dark corridor with a man speaking, this shows the audience that there will be dark elements to this film which may attract different people to see the film. The main shot type used in the trailer is mid shots and close ups these are used to show the emotions in the characters but also to set the scene and pace of the film. There is also a lot of very fast paced montages of different scenes giving prevalence to the action. We see many fast paced chance scenes which are made peeve last by the quick paced montages of them. The music for the trailer is the iconic James Bond music as it creates a feeling of anticipation in the audience as that music has been synonymous with the action thriller James Bond series, there is also a voice over conversation between two characters who we know one is James Bond and the other is a women who he sees as an authrotative figure this conversation show that there is a lot of emotion. Is what James Bond is doing therefore this shows the audience that they might see a new side to this chat get which they have grown up with. This film is advertised with the iconic 007 symbol as it is put into the release date, and there is also a website. From this trailer not much can be decified as to the story line therefore that will be released later.

Seven trailer analysis

the trailer begins whith an over the shoulder, mid shot of Brad Pitt looking slightly hurt but completely serious the use of the over the shoulder shot creates a feeling of curiosity as the audience wants to know who Brad Pit's character is talking too. This is a theme throughout the trailer the use of mid shots help to both set the scene and help to show the characters emotions, the use of close ups is also key in this trailer as it shows the emotion of the character therefore creating a thought in the audiences' mind of worry for the characters and intrigue as they want to know why it is happening. The trailer uses a lot of fast paced editing with quick shots used in a very quick montage to show things which may be key to the plot line. The music is very tense and if something is said or something needs to be seen then the music either amps up or it gets more fast paced, there are three voiceover in this trailer one helping to explain the story line and the other two is a conversation betwee. The two main characters this shows that these characters are key to the storyline. This film plays on the to star characters of Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as this is a good way to advertise the film because people will go see this film because they are in it, another theme which is used to advertise the film is the use of face paced shots to make it seem that this film is almost a complete action film. What we learn from the trailer is the the two title characters are both at the opposite ends of their detective careers and then they have one murder case which needs both of them to solve it, what is also shown in the trailer is that the murder are all based around the seven deadly sins, this creates a feeling in the audience of how are the other five murders/sins going to be shown as we do see two of the murder/sins. This film is targeted at 18-35 year olds as it deals with mature themes but is also a crime thriller which means there will be lots of action.

Concussion trailer

In the opening scene we see an establishing shot of the Pittsburgh Steelers football stadium this shows us that the film is going to be based  around american football and in america. We then see a mid shot of two characters talking, then there is a small montage of the man overlooking a football team practicing then there is a brain scan this shows he is a doctor therefore this gives us a new respect for this character as doctors are usually very respected people, we also then see in this montage that he is a critical surgeon and this shows his intelligence. The music throughout the trailer is very tense and increases in volume this creates a feeling of real drama which is the genre of this film. From the trailer we can that the story is based on a true one and is about a doctor going against the norm and challenging the NFL which is a massive company in the US. This trailer is aimed at people in the age group of 25+ as it is a serious drama and most serious dramas are aimed at this age group as they may have had experienced the real life events this film is based upon.

Ransom trailer analysis

The trailer opens with a mid shot of the main character and all through the trailer we see lots of close ups of the main character and the supporting cast the shots are mostly close ups or mid-shot as a way to show the characters emotions. the pace of the trailer starts of slow as a way to show the danger that the main characters son is in and it help to build tension towards the relationships between the characters. the pace increases as the trailer goes on as the genre seems to change from a dramatic thriller to a action thriller as we see gun shots, chases and lots of pans across the landscapes. The narrative is a man who has been successful in life and his life is going well and this is completely flipped when his son is kidnapped and this then brings out an aggressive and dangerous side as he promises to kill the man who has kidnapped his son. One of main things which is said in the trailer which really shows the tone of the film as he threatens the kidnapper on national television this shows the darkness of the main character. We can also see the emotion from Renee Russo as she gets angry with the FBI agents. We are not shown much of the location as it is only hinted at with NYCPD on some of the police cars. We can also see how guns will play a big part in the film as there is a lot of guns used in the trailer. In the beginning we see Mel Gibson's character as a suppressed scared man but as the trailer continues we see the evolution as he turns into a strong threatening character.

spectre trailer analysis

In the trailer the opening shot is of a close up of Daniel Craig who plays Bond which shows us he is a key character.  There are also some interesting establishing shots of desert locations and snowy mountains which show the target audience that the film will be set in a range of different locations around the world and that the film will be epic and expensive. There is also a long shot of London with Big Ben in it which would appeal to a US audience, who need to buy into the film for it to be successful.  The pace of editing is very interesting and towards the end the pace really increases and there are lots of shots of things like helicopter chases and explosions in a fast paced montage which reflects the excitement in the film.  We don't find out very much about the film itself - we do see an antagonist and there is some conversation, in shot reverse shot, between Bond and him.  They want to kill each other and we don't know why - but we don't need to because there is already a very strong fanbase for the film.  James Bond's iconic pistol is shown and he is shown wearing a suit, which connotes success and wealth - which James Bond is associated with.  The music is very tense and dramatic and builds up to the theme tune for the franchise.  The film is advertised at the end with a release dater, hashtag and website address as the iconic theme plays.  A good trailer-although I would have liked to have found out more about the story.
